12 April 2012

A 22-year-old man has been charged with attempting to shoot dead two police officers following an alleged security van robbery.

Mark Leigh Roberts is due to appear at Brent Magistrates' Court charged with attempted murder.

A second man, Andrew Alexander Roberts, 41, was charged with actual bodily harm after allegedly punching a female police officer in the face.

He will also appear in court over the alleged incident in north London on Friday, Scotland Yard said.

Both men, of no fixed address, were also charged with robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm. Police were unable to say whether the two men were related.

Police were called at 1.50pm on Friday to the scene of an alleged security van robbery outside the Allied Irish Bank in Finchley Road.

They subsequently arrested Andrew Roberts, who allegedly punched a female police officer in the face.

She was later treated at the Royal Free Hospital and received three stitches for a cut to the left eye.

Mark Roberts is accused of firing a handgun at police, before being arrested by armed officers in a cafe on Finchley Road. No police were injured in the shooting.

The robbery allegedly relates to a security box, recovered by police, containing tens of thousands of pounds.
