Man charged with patient's murder

12 April 2012

A man has appeared in court charged with murdering a fellow patient at a psychiatric hospital.

Telahum Tedola, 36, appeared at Rochdale Magistrates' Court accused of murdering Rosaland Kim McManus, 58, an in-patient at the Birch Hill Hospital in Littleborough, Rochdale.

The victim was found collapsed on a ward at about 6pm on Monday evening. She was taken to Rochdale Infirmary where she later died.

A post mortem examination has concluded she died from strangulation.

Detectives have not yet traced any of Rosaland's family and are now appealing for Rosaland's next of kin, or anyone who knew of any family, to contact them.

It is believed she may have lived in Northern Ireland, but nothing more is known about her background.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Lever said: "This is a tragic case in that Rosaland appears to have no immediate relatives currently living in this country.

"She has been identified by staff at the hospital, but we still want to contact any next of kin."

Anyone who is related, or knows relatives of Ms McManus is asked to call Rochdale CID on 0161 856 9283.

Tedola was remanded in custody and the case committed to Manchester Crown Court for hearing on August 22.
