Man in court on G20 protest charge

A 21-year-old man is due appear in court charged over an attack on a bank during the G20 protests in London.

Mindaugas Lenartavicius is charged with arson recklessly endangering life after demonstrators smashed their way into the Royal Bank of Scotland branch in the City during violent skirmishes on Wednesday.

He will appear at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court in central London.

A 17-year-old girl will also appear at West London Youth Court charged with burglary with intent to commit damage.

Two 18-year-old men, Daniel Champion and Ben Shiells, were also charged with burglary, criminal damage and theft of a computer over the incident and will appear in court later this month.

More than 120 people were arrested in relation to protests during the G20 summit as the capital saw sporadic outbreaks of violence over the last two days.

Earlier, police seized dozens of protesters in raids on two squats as the hunt for violent G20 anarchists continued.

Commander Bob Broadhurst, the officer in charge of policing the G20 protest, said officers were using video footage to track down those responsible.

He said the "overall mood" of the demonstrations was good, but added that "small groups of protesters intent on violence mixed with the crowds of lawful demonstrators".

A spokesman for Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, who visited the police G20 nerve centre, said she was "very impressed" by the policing response.
