Man remanded over breach at No 10

12 April 2012

A 32-year-old illegal immigrant was remanded in custody when he appeared in court in connection with a Downing Street security breach.

Byung Jin Lee, a South Korean national, appeared before City of Westminster Magistrates' Court charged with possessing a "bladed article" and assaulting a police officer.

He is alleged to have climbed into a secure area armed with a knife on Sunday night, prompting a security review of the Prime Minister's residence.

Tony Blair is believed to have been home at the time although detectives are satisfied there was never any threat to his safety.

Speaking through an interpreter, Lee gave his address as Orange Drive, Jericho, New York.

Senior District Judge Timothy Workman adjourned the case until October 10.

Mr Workman told Lee it was not necessary for him to attend court on that date.

He is next due to appear at the same court on October 17.
