One eyewitness, who has not been named, told the Manchester Evening News: “A car hit five or six people. People were flung everywhere.

"I saw a man in a bush afterwards and a lady with head injuries.”

There is no evidence to suggest the incident is terrorism-related, Greater Manchester Police said.

A man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Greater Manchester Police said a 21-year-old man had been detained on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop after a collision.

He remains in police custody.

A blue BMW 330D - believed to be involved in the collision - has been located in the Salford area.

Four ambulances and a hazardous area response team attended the scene, along with three senior clinicians.
