Manufacturing blow as 200 jobs axed

12 April 2012

The manufacturing sector in Scotland has been delivered another massive blow after an electronics firm announced it is to axe 220 jobs

Simclar is to close two of its plants, in Irvine and Kilwinning in Ayrshire. The announcement by the company follows 200 job losses in November.

And it comes two weeks after cash machine producer NCR said it was to axe 650 manufacturing jobs in Dundee.

Simclar blamed pressure from low-cost economies, falling orders and increased uncertainty within the Scottish manufacturing sector.

A spokesman said: "The current market conditions have made the continued operation of Simclar (Ayrshire) impossible.

"Simclar has made every attempt to restructure and save the business, but it would not be in the best interests of the Group as a whole to continue to do so in the long term."

Staff were told of the closure at a meeting with management on Monday morning.

Parent company Simclar Group Ltd will continue to employ around 300 workers at its headquarters in Dunfermline.

The firm also has manufacturing plants in China, Mexico and the US, with a global workforce of 1,800.

It announced in November that it was to withdraw from hard-tooling manufacturing with the loss of 200 jobs at the Irvine plant. It cited a drop in demand for its products and efforts to attract new business have since failed.
