M&S accused of ‘ripping off’ Dishoom’s iconic bacon naan roll

‘Having naan of it’: Dishoom have accused M&S of not giving the chain credit for it’s famous Bacon Naan roll

Marks and Spencer have been accused of ripping off Indian restaurant chain Dishoom’s iconic bacon naan roll.

In the spiciest social media war since Cuthbert and Colin the caterpillar cakes, Dishoom has hit out at the luxury supermarket for claiming the dish as their own.

By adding an egg to the bacon naan roll M&S had claimed the recipe was invented by their own chef Chris Baber in a post to Instagram.

The comments were quickly flooded with loyal patrons of the upmarket Indian chain with some accusing M&S of “colonial exploitation” and copying the recipe without crediting the Indian cafe.

Later the post was edited to say the dish was “inspired by Dishoom”.

In a statement posted to Twitter Dishoom accused the supermarket giants of “peddling” the recipe as their own.

It said: “They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and we were, of course, a little taken aback to have inspired such an esteemed establishment.

“It has since become clear that this recipe is now being used, without any credit, across numerous paid advertising platforms – and for all our flippancy, in honesty, it hurts.

“After a year in which our cafés have been mostly closed, a year when we’ve spent many months (and countless sleepless nights) perfecting our first-ever meal kit to be able to bring this much-loved dish to the doors of patrons nationwide, it hurts all the more.”

They invited patrons to book a table in order to help protect the 950 jobs under threat from the pandemic, adding: “You see, @marksandspencer, this isn’t just a bacon naan roll, this is the Dishoom Bacon Naan Roll, and it means a great deal more to us than you know.”

With cafes closed throughout lockdown, Dishoom had been offering bacon naan meal kits with a donation to Magic Breakfast to help feed the UK’s poorest children.

Each home-delivered kit costs £16 and contains all the ingredients you need to make breakfast for two: smoked streaky bacon from Ramsay of Carluke, Dishoom’s signature tomato-chilli jam, fresh coriander, cream cheese and three naan dough balls.
