An "armed" man is reportedly on the run following a robbery at a McDonald’s near Bristol.

A large police presence was seen at the fast-food branch in Yate, where the incident took place shortly after 7am on Monday.

Eyewitnesses claim they saw a firearm and Avon and Somerset Police have said the unidentified man made off with “a quantity of cash”.

A search of the area is currently ongoing, with the help of the police helicopter.

Nobody was injured during the robbery.

"Officers are currently at the scene of McDonald's in Yate following an incident this morning,” said Detective Inspector Will Thorpe.

"Shortly after 7am we received a report of an armed robbery, in which a male had made off with a quantity of cash.

"Nobody was injured during the incident but a firearm was reportedly sighted.

"A search of the area, including with the assistance of the NPAS helicopter, is continuing at this time”.

This comes as another robbery is said to have taken place at Miss Millie's, a chicken restaurant, in Yate the night before.

"At approximately 6.20pm last night (Sunday, February 7) we received a call about a similar incident at Miss Millie's in North Parade, Yate,” the detective said.

"At this time we are treating the two matters linked."

James Ball, mayor of nearby Chipping Sodbury, urged people to stay inside.

"If you're wondering why the police helicopter is circling Yate, there was an armed robbery at McDonald's this morning. The robber is on the run so please be careful," he tweeted.

"The armed robber may be hiding in The Ridge or Ridgewoods. Please lock your doors and stay inside until further notice."

McDonald's said in a statement: "We can confirm that an incident took place this morning at our Yate restaurant.

"We are currently supporting our people and assisting police with their ongoing enquiries."

Anyone who witnessed what happened is being asked to call 101 with reference number 5221027524.
