Millicent Fawcett’s birthday has been celebrated by Google with one of the search engine website’s elaborate Doodles.

The British feminist who died in 1929 would have been 171 today.

She was primarily known for her work as a campaigner for Women’s suffrage.

The doodle shows Ms Fawcett campaigning alongside other suffragettes.

Images released by Google of early concepts of the Doodle showed Ms Fawcett speaking to a group of women saying her famous quote: “Courage calls for courage everywhere.”

Ms Fawcett was a tireless campaigner and fought to improve women’s opportunity for higher education.

In 1875 she co-founded Newham College, Cambridge.

She later became the president of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies.

Ms Fawcett established the International Women's Suffrage Alliance, forming links with women all over the world who were campaigning for equal voting rights.

Alongside her feminist work, Ms Fawcett was also a fierce civil and human rights campaigner.

In July 1901 she led the British government's commission to South Africa investigating conditions in the concentration camps that had been created there in the wake of the Second Boer War.

Monday's doodle will reach those using the search engine website in the United Kingdom.
