Moment teachers stun pupils by bursting into chorus of Les Mis

School teachers stunned students during an end-of-term assembly when they burst into a surprise rendition of Les Miserables.

Principal Chris Wheeler was giving the annual prize giving speech at Monkton Combe School in Bath when he broke into song.

A video clip posted by the school on Facebook shows him take on the role of Jean Valjean as he starts singing ‘One Day More’, before he is joined by other teachers in the audience.

Some pupils and parents seem uncertain but are soon swept up in the performance, breaking out into applause and laughter.

The school wrote on Facebook: "The students and parents at this year's Speech Day at Monkton were certainly in for a surprise.

"Principal Chris Wheeler was halfway through his speech when this happened..."

One person commented: "Absolutely amazing! Proud to be a part of Monkton School."

Different teachers in the audience then burst into song

A former student wrote: "Makes me nostalgic for my monkton days!! Wish this had happened in my time there! Amazing!"

Another person added: "Chris Wheeler is fabulous... he worked at a school in London with me years ago and I knew he was talented!"

The school has been lauded after the clip was posted online

Mr Wheeler said after the performance: “I am always keen to show pupils that just as we ask them to put themselves out there, so we are prepared to do the same.

“There aren't many schools where the deputy head, medical centre nurse, a houseparent, pupils and even a governor would be prepared to risk embarrassment in the name of fun but I am very proud that Monkton is one.”
