Ian Brady: Moors Murderer cremated and buried at sea without ceremony

Martin Coulter3 November 2017

The body of Moors Murderer Ian Brady was cremated and buried at sea in the middle of the night last week, it has been revealed.

The child killer, who died at Ashworth high security hospital in Merseyside in May, aged 79, was cremated without ceremony.

Brady had requested the fifth movement of Hector Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique be played at his cremation but the high court overruled his request, saying his body would be disposed of with "no music and no ceremony".

A court ruled earlier this year that the disposal of his body should undertaken in a way that did not cause "offence and distress" to his victims' families.

Brady, alongside Myra Hindley, tortured and murdered five children in the 1960s. She died in prison in 2002.

An inquest into Brady's death heard he died of natural causes.

Documents show that the serial killer's body was collected from Royal Liverpool Hospital's mortuary by a council official at around 9pm on Wednesday October 25.

His ashes were then placed in a weighted biodegradable urn and driven to Liverpool marina, where they were spread at sea at 2.30am.
