Mother and daughter's inquest ends

12 April 2012

An inquest into the deaths of a mother and daughter in a burning car after years of abuse from a gang of youths is expected to conclude.

Fiona Pilkington, 38, was driven to such despair by the 16-strong gang, some as young as 10, that she drove her car to a secluded lay-by and set it alight while she and her disabled daughter Francecca Hardwick, sat inside.

Their bodies were found in the family's blue Austin Maestro at the side of the A47 near Earl Shilton, Leicestershire, on October 23 2007.

An inquest at Loughborough Town Hall heard Ms Pilkington and her 18-year-old daughter, known as Frankie, suffered more than 10 years of vile abuse from the gang at their home in Bardon Road in nearby Barwell. Ms Pilkington's son, 19-year-old Anthony Hardwick, was also bullied by the gang.

The inquest heard earlier that the teenagers were bullied because of their disabilities but police failed to act because they did not see the family as vulnerable.

Following the inquest's conclusion, a press conference announcing the findings of a serious case review into the way officers and social services handled the family's calls for help will be held.

It was going to be held at Leicestershire Police's HQ in Enderby on the outskirts of Leicester but it will now be held at Loughborough Town Hall.
