MP condemns both sides in clashes

12 April 2012

A local MP has condemned both sides involved in a city centre clash that saw 35 people arrested.

Khalid Mahmood, MP for Perry Barr in Birmingham hit out at anti-fascists and protesters against Islamic fundamentalism who met in scenes of confrontation in Birmingham.

There were noisy and angry scenes when Union flag-waving demonstrators with the English and Welsh Defence League and Casuals United came into contact with Unite Against Fascism marchers.

Two people were injured, according to West Midlands Police, and there were several reports of criminal damage including a car.

Police said they have now arrested 35 people, mainly for disorder.

As investigations continued, Labour MP Mr Mahmood said he had previously predicted this could happen when the rival groups met.

He said: "I think the groups ought to know better, and certainly if there was going to be rallies by both these groups at the same time it would always lead to this sort of confrontation.

"My issue is not just that it took place, but that it took place in the city centre environment where families and children were just going about their normal lives.

"To put that at risk is terrible, this is why I think these issues ought to be taken more seriously."
