'Murder' of failed UK asylum seeker

12 April 2012

The Government has said it is continuing to monitor the situation in Sudan after it was reported a failed asylum seeker returned there had been murdered.

Adam Osman Mohammed, 32, was killed after Sudanese security officers followed him home from the airport in Khartoum, according to The Independent.

He was gunned down in his home in front of his wife and four-year-old son just days after arriving in his village.

The case is to be used by asylum campaigners to counter Home Office attempts to lift the ban on the removal and deportation to Sudan of failed asylum seekers, with Government lawyers expected to go to court next month to argue it is safe to return as many as 3,000 people to Khartoum, the newspaper added.

A UK Border Agency spokesman said: "Britain has a proud tradition of offering refuge to those who need our help.

"We consider every asylum application with the utmost care, and crucially there is oversight from the independent courts.

"We are continuing to monitor the situation in Sudan, and in July last year we took the decision to stop returning non-Arab Darfurs until the courts decided it was safe to do so."

It was understood the individual concerned left voluntarily after his appeal for asylum was rejected, a decision which was upheld by the courts.

He is believed to have left the country on a voluntary assisted return and reintegration programme, under which people receive money to go back.

Darfur exploded into conflict in 2003 when rebel groups began attacking government targets. The Sudanese government retaliated by launching a military and police campaign in the region. Since then more than two million people have become displaced after fleeing their homes.
