New car production speeding up

12 April 2012

Car production accelerated again last month - rising 11.1% compared with November 2009.

A total of 125,458 cars were made in the UK in November 2010, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.

Commercial vehicle (CV) production also rose last month, going up 21.2% to 11,316.

Car production for the year so far is 28.7% up on the January-November 2009 total, while CV production is up 37.1%.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: "UK vehicle production has increased in almost every month of 2010 and is driving a manufacturing-led recovery.

"The 11.1% rise in car production in November was almost twice the rate of growth recorded in October, with year-to-date production up by almost 30% on last year.

"Production of commercial vehicles was up 21.2% in November, whilst engine production also returned to growth after a dip in October.

"This year vehicle and engine production look set to better 2009 performance by some 300,000 units and while sales in 2011 will be challenging both domestically and in key export markets, we expect modest production growth across the board."
