New Star Wars trailer: fans given first look at The Force Awakens

Star Wars fans were given a glimpse of the new film today as the official trailer for The Force Awakens was released.

The much anticipated film, which is a sequel to the original trilogy, stars Hollywood actors Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher and is directed by J.J Abrams.

British actor John Boyega also stars as a Stormtrooper.

The blockbuster is set about 30 years after the defeat of the Empire and the fall of Darth Vader, the subject of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.

The trailer shows the return of the Millennium Falcon, Stormtroopers, X-wing fighters, and a new-look lightsaber.

Earlier this week a fake trailer for the film, which is set for release on December 18 next year, was posted on YouTube and has been watched more than four million times.
