One Direction star Louis Tomlinson could soon be buying Doncaster Rovers football club.

The singer, who was embroiled in a drug scandal this week after footage emerged of him allegedly smoking cannabis, has hopes to buy the League One side.

Tomlinson is a devoted Rovers fan and made his professional football debut for the team’s reserves earlier this year.

The Sun reported he has joined forces with the club's former owner John Ryan, who is still a major shareholder, to buy the club who were relegated to League One from the Championship at the end of the season.

In a statement, the club said: "Following reports in the media, the owners of Doncaster Rovers can confirm that they have been approached and dialogue has taken place with external parties about a proposed takeover.

"At this stage the club is not in a position to comment further about the level and detail of those discussions, but will do so as soon as it is legally possible.

"The owners are looking to ensure a swift resolution to the discussions to ensure that this does not impact adversely on the summer transfer activity.

"Any decision made by the current owners will focus on for what is best for Doncaster Rovers in both the short and long term."

Tomlinson’s support of the Rovers has attracted young fans to the team, with 2,000 extra fans attending his debut for a reserves match against Rotherham United in February.

Video footage emerged this week of Tomlinson smoking cannabis with fellow band member Zayn Malik in the back of a car during their tour in Peru.

Some fans have turned their back on the band in outrage and have been re-selling their tickets for their current UK tour.

Earlier this month the boy band were named fourth in the Sunday Times Rich List of young musicians with an estimated fortune of £14 million each and a combined wealth of £70 million.
