One in three 'want further tax cut'

12 April 2012

Just under a third of Britons would like to see a further reduction in the rate of income tax they pay, a survey shows.

Around 31% of people said if they could send one message to Chancellor Alistair Darling they would ask for income tax rates to be cut, according to independent financial adviser website Unbiased.co.uk.

But while 12% of those questioned would like to see everyone pay less tax on the money they earn, 19% said they only wanted an income tax reduction for the less well-off.

The Government has faced a backbench revolt over the abolition of the 10% income tax rate, which was scrapped when the basic rate was reduced from 22% to 20%, hitting people on low incomes hardest. The rebellion led to the Government promising to compensate those who are most affected by the move.

Nearly a quarter of the people questioned for Unbiased.co.uk said they would most like the Chancellor to increase the level of the state pension.

A further 6% would like higher pay for public sector workers, while 5% would like increased support for carers and the same proportion think the inheritance tax threshold should be raised to £750,000.

Other messages people said they would like to give to Mr Darling included not funding the third generation nuclear deterrent, capping the budget for the London Olympics at £4 billion, reimbursing people who lost their pensions and spending more on environmental issues.

David Elms, chief executive of Unbiased.co.uk, said: "Our research shows just how much of a discussion point income tax is - and that is not just for the Government but also for the average Briton.

"In the current economic climate people are taking a much closer look at their finances to make ends meet and it is not surprising that a reduction of income tax is one of the first areas people are asking for."

Opinium Research questioned 3,048 people during February.
