David Cameron has warned Britons to avoid an island in the Maldives amid political turmoil in the paradise destination.

The Prime Minister advised against non-essential travel to Male, which is popular with honeymooning couples from the UK.

He said: "We advise British tourists to avoid non-essential travel to Male island and those using Male airport and the tourist resorts should exercise caution."

His warning came after claims the Maldives' ex-president Mohamed Nasheed was forced to quit earlier this week after a judge was arrested.

Speaking at Prime Minister's Questions in the Commons, Mr Cameron said Britain's high commissioner was meeting political leaders in the capital.

"We call on the new government to demonstrate its respect for the rights of all political parties and their members and to ensure the constitution is upheld," the PM added.

"This country has strong links with the Maldives and has a good relationship with President Nasheed.

"But we have to be clear: President Nasheed has resigned and we have a strong interest in the wellbeing of several thousand British tourists and in a stable and democratic government in the Maldives."

Conservative MP David Amess, who chairs Parliament's all-party group on the islands, said he was disappointed at the president's overthrow "in a coup d'etat".

He called on the government to "do all it can to ensure no violence results and the democratic institutions remain" because of Britain's "historic links with the islands".
