Pregnant mother dies in house fire

12 April 2012

A mother-of-three who died in a house fire was pregnant with her fourth child, it was reported.

Charlene Henry, 25, lived at the house in Edenbridge, Kent, with her partner and three children.

The rest of the family escaped from the blaze and Ms Henry's partner went back into the house to try to rescue her but could not reach her, Kent Police said.

Ms Henry's body was found inside the house. According to reports, she was seven months pregnant.

Five fire crews with breathing equipment spent half an hour putting out the flames on Monday morning. Police said the children were not injured.

Ms Henry's mother Audrey Batchelor, 47, who lives nearby, said her daughter woke up and smelt smoke.

She sent her partner Danny to investigate.

"He saw the fire and got the children out but when he went back for Charlene he couldn't get upstairs," she told the Daily Mail.

"I live so close but was helpless. I can't believe she has gone. She was a wonderful girl. She was a lovely daughter. She helped with a lot of kids' clubs and did the old people's bingo for them. She did a lot of voluntary work."

A police spokesman said an inquest would be held into Ms Henry's death. Police said the cause of the fire was not yet known and an investigation was taking place.
