Prince to unveil Bali bomb memorial

12 April 2012

The Prince of Wales will unveil a permanent memorial in honour of the 202 victims - including 28 Britons - of the Bali bombings, it has been announced.

The ceremony will take place on October 12, four years after the explosions caused such devastation on the Indonesian island.

Survivors of the attacks, as well as the friends and relatives of those killed, will attend the hour-long unveiling.

The memorial - a marble globe with 202 doves carved into the sculpture - will stand in St James's Park in central London.

A spokeswoman for the Bali Bomb Victims Group said: "This is a significant moment for all those affected by the bombings and in particular those who lost loved ones in this terrible outrage.

"Our aim in marking this dreadful tragedy is to provide a beautiful and fitting public and permanent memorial to the loss of so many innocent people.

"The deaths of so many innocent victims in the ongoing terrorist war should never be forgotten and we hope this permanent memorial will stand both as our tribute to those we have lost and a warning to governments and the wider world community."

People from 21 countries were among those who died when two bombs ripped through a bar and nightclub in the popular tourist area of Kuta in Bali.

Of those killed, 88 were Australian, 28 were British and others came from across the world including Indonesia, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, Poland and Greece.
