Probe launched after body found

A section of the A196 near Morpeth has been closed by police following the discovery of a woman's body

Police have launched an investigation after a woman's body was found in Northumbria.

Officers closed a section of the A196 near the town of Morpeth following the discovery at 5.25pm on Thursday.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "An investigation is under way and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death."

She said a section of the road between Dunces Houses and Shadfen - about a mile to the east of Morpeth - has been closed to all traffic to allow the scene to be examined. It remains shut.

The spokeswoman added: "That is all the information we have at this time."
