Race to South Pole featuring Prince Harry is abandoned over safety concerns

Prince Harry's South Pole walking race against teams from other countries has been called off over safety concerns, it has been confirmed.

The prince was joined by four injured British soldiers for the 200 mile expedition, which departed on December 1.

But "difficult terrain" has meant the competitive side of the race called off, the charity Walking With The Wounded said.

Team UK, which features Prince Harry, had been due to race rivals from Canada and the USA.

But it was confirmed last night that the teams would instead continue their journey to the South Pole as one group.

Expedition Director Ed Parker said in a statement: "The weather remains good but the terrain is very difficult, far harder than we were anticipating.

"The reasons for this are entirely safety based. I am looking at the three teams. They are going really well but people are beginning to get very, very tired.

"With our doctor here, who I am in constant contact with, we just feel we are beginning to push people a little too hard, so I have suspended the race," he added.

The newly-united group will depart for the final 70 mile leg of the journey today and are expected to arrive at the South Pole in seven days.
