Rhys father: Unite for Hillsborough

12 April 2012

The father of murdered schoolboy Rhys Jones has called for Liverpool to unite in memory of the 96 Hillsborough victims for the 20th anniversary of the disaster.

Stephen Jones, who supports rival club Everton, says everyone living in the city needs to come together to honour those who lost their lives.

Mr Jones, whose 11-year-old son was shot dead by Sean Mercer, 18, now serving life in jail, said: "I think it is important that the whole of Liverpool remembers the 96 and sticks together."

He continued: "I would like to see the whole of Liverpool unite - the reds and the blues to remember those who lost their lives at Hillsborough."

The father-of-two, speaking in an interview with Real Radio, a North West based station, added: "We shouldn't forget what's gone on. There were a lot of hard lessons learnt at Hillsborough and there are still people who need to be brought to book.

"That disaster could have happened to any football club. Unfortunately it happened to Liverpool, but it could easily have been a tragedy concerning Everton football club. You just hope that people will respect the significance of what happened."

Mr Jones remembers hearing about the tragedy while listening to the football commentary on the radio.

He was one of hundreds of people who later went to Anfield to lay flowers and pay tribute to those who died at the 1989 FA Cup semi final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

"It was just a sea of flowers," he added. "I'd never seen anything like that before. It was amazing how many people had taken the time to actually go to Anfield and lay flowers.

"I didn't see myself as being an Everton supporter. Behind the colour of your shirt, there's a human being there. Ninety six people had lost their lives and it was a real tragedy that touched everyone in Liverpool. It wasn't a question of whether I was a red or a blue. Ninety six people had lost their lives and it was devastating for the families."
