Royal Mail hits reliability record

12 April 2012

The reliability of postal deliveries has reached record levels with more than nine out of 10 first class letters arriving a day after being posted, the Royal Mail has announced.

In the three months to September, 94.5% of first class post was delivered on time, the best performance of any quarter on record and better than the target figure of 93%.

Second class mail deliveries also passed the 98.5% target with a 99.1% performance over the same three months, the Royal Mail claimed.

"These are great results and shows we are delivering the best quality of service to our customers ever," said Ian Griffiths, managing director of Royal Mail Letters.

He thanked postmen and women for their hard work and said the challenge the organisation faced was to maintain the high quality of services in the run up to the busy Christmas period.

The Royal Mail's parcels service recorded a performance of 95.2%, above its 90% target, while the special delivery service, which guarantees next day deliveries, achieved a 99.1% performance.
