A new £100 coin featuring an iconic image of Big Ben's tower has been produced to mark the New Year.

The coin, which can be used as legal tender, is one of 50,000 being manufactured by the Royal Mint for 2015.

Featuring the clocktower at the Houses of Parliament, it weighs two ounces in 999 fine silver.

The coins can now be bought for £100 each from the Royal Mint website.

In a description online, a spokesman for the coin production company said: "This wonderful coin celebrates a beloved part of the recognisable portrait of Britain, seen through the eyes of the tourists who flock to visit this architectural marvel.

"Surely even the most jaded Londoner couldn’t help but be impressed, and remember the very first time they saw this incredible sight."
