One of the rising stars in menswear has called on the UK to recognise Savile Row in the way the French recognise champagne.

Designer Patrick Grant, famed for reinventing bespoke tailors Norton & Sons, said: “Savile Row tailoring and bespoke is like champagne; its reputation and integrity must be protected. The art of bespoke must be recognised and promoted.”

Grant, who also runs tailor E Tautz, spoke at the launch of Savile Row Bespoke Association’s partnership with Scotch whisky brand Chivas. Guests at the party at Sartoria in Savile Row included model David Gandy and cyclist Victoria Pendleton. Also there was Anda Rowland, daughter of the late businessman Roland “Tiny” Rowland, who owns tailors Anderson & Sheppard.

Chivas, which is owned by French giant Pernod Ricard, will provide the tailors with support and marketing to help promote the expertise on Savile Row and target a “wider and younger audience”.

A Chivas spokeswoman said the link would highlight the “shared qualities and time-honoured skills between the Chivas master distillers and the tailors of Savile Row”.
