Ed Miliband heckled and hounded out of Edinburgh shopping centre amid chaotic scenes at Scottish independence rally

'Ugly tactics': Ed Miliband hit out at Yes campaigners

Ed Miliband hit out at "ugly" tactics used by Yes campaigners after he was hounded out of a shopping centre during a Scottish referendum rally.

Furious protesters branded the Labour leader a "f***ing liar" as a visit to harness support for Better Together descended into chaos.

Mr Miliband pleaded for calm as shoppers were trampled and pushed aside during clashes at the St James Shopping Centre in Edinburgh.

Aides were forced to step in to cut the visit short as Mr Miliband struggled to make his voice heard.

"I think we have seen in parts of this campaign an ugly side to it from the Yes campaign," he told the BBC afterwards.

His visit had been intended to persuade undecided voters to support the campaign for the UK to remain in tact after Thursday's referendum.

"What I've enjoyed about this campaign, including today when I get the chance, is meeting people who are genuinely undecided," he said.

"If people vote No, it's for change and more powers for a stronger Scotland, as well as NHS funding guarantees, and that's got to be weighed against the big risks of voting Yes.

"That has been the choice that people are facing in these last couple of days in this referendum campaign."

The incident comes after allegations from No campaigners and journalists that they had been intimidated by nationalists.

Repect MP George Galloway yesterday claimed he had been sent a live bullet in the post as chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander was heckled at a 'No' rally in Glasgow.

ITV's political editor, Tom Bradby, also revealed in a blog that he had found covering the referendum "unpleasant".

He wrote: "My first major job as a correspondent was in Ireland in the early nineties and, despite the fact that there was a bitter war going on all round me that took many lives, I experienced virtually no personal hostility at all from anyone. They didn’t lob accusations of bias around every time you asked a question either."
