Second care home body to be exhumed

12 April 2012

Police are to exhume the second of three bodies, as part of an ongoing investigation into a series of suspicious deaths at a care home.

The remains of grandmother-of-four Marion Alder, 79, will be exhumed from the graveyard of St Leonard's Church in the rural Somerset village of Butleigh.

Mrs Alder died in July 2006, while a resident at Parkfields residential home in the same village.

Police are also investigating the deaths of six other elderly residents at the home.

Parkfields former managers Rachel and Leigh Baker were originally arrested following the New Year's Day death of 97-year-old Lucy Cox.

Forensic officers will descend on the graveyard of the church, which dates back to the 14th century, to begin the grim task of digging up Mrs Alder's remains.

After the exhumation, a post mortem examination will be carried out with forensic officers checking the body for traces of drugs.

Mrs Alder, who was married to local pharmacist Roy Alder, moved to Butleigh in 1987.

There was a feeling of tense expectation in the quiet picture-postcard village.

Butleigh lies in the heart of the desolate Somerset levels and is watched over by the looming bulk of Glastonbury Tor, five miles to the north.
