Sheridan dismisses 'swingers' video

12 April 2012

Tommy Sheridan has said he had never been to the house where a video claiming to show him admitting he visited a swingers club was allegedly filmed.

Speaking at a press conference in Dundee, the former Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) leader branded the News of the World video "a concoction".

Mr Sheridan spoke in the wake of a police investigation into the evidence given by witnesses in his £200,000 defamation trial against the Sunday newspaper.

The tape, made public on Sunday, is reportedly a recording made by George McNeilage, who was Mr Sheridan's best man at his wedding. It is claimed to feature the MSP admitting that he attended a swingers club on more than one occasion - the allegations that were printed by the newspaper, sparking the five-week legal battle.

Mr Sheridan denounced those who were said to have authenticated the footage, saying that the voices had been spliced and painted himself as the victim of a plot by the News of the World and suggested, at one point, "some sinister forces as well".

The Crown Office announced on Monday that it had instructed police to begin a criminal inquiry into allegations of perjury by witnesses who appeared during the defamation trial in August.

The trial and its outcome led to public acrimony within the SSP which culminated with Mr Sheridan and another MSP, Rosemary Byrne, leaving to set up the breakaway left-wing party Solidarity.

News Of The World Scottish editor Bob Bird welcomed news of the police inquiry into the perjury claims, saying the paper would cooperate fully with the police inquiry.

A spokesman for the newspaper said: "The News of the World is in possession of an original recording of Tommy Sheridan, in which he admits our allegations against him are true.

"Laboratory analysis by independent experts has proven the tape to be genuine and we are happy to make our evidence available to police. We note with interest Mr Sheridan's suggestion that the tape has been spliced. We are confident that any further forensic analysis will demonstrate 100 per cent the honesty and integrity of the tape."
