Shot man served time for gun crimes

12 April 2012

A man who was shot dead in the street had served time in prison for injuring two people in a shooting incident, police have said.

Daniel Keatinge died in a hail of bullets as he left the home of a friend in north Liverpool on Friday night.

It is thought as many as five shots were fired at Mr Keatinge by a lone gunman who then ran off on foot.

The 25 year old, who was killed in Formosa Road, Fazakerley, was known to police as he was jailed for eight years in August 2003.

He had fired gunshots towards a nightclub doorman in Liverpool city centre but missed and struck two of the venue's customers. Neither was seriously hurt.

He admitted wounding, possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life and dangerous driving at Liverpool Crown Court.

Merseyside Police said they believe Mr Keatinge, of Higher Lane, Fazakerley, was targeted although the motive remains unclear.

Detectives said the shooting is not being treated as a gang-related incident.

Det Supt Ian Mulcahey, the senior investigating officer, said: "Tackling gun crime is a top priority for Merseyside Police and we will not tolerate firearms on the streets of Merseyside."

Results of a post-mortem examination are due, and detectives are interviewing key witnesses.
