Drinking on trains just got even easier after one Twitter user shared a helpful life hack.

Patrick Dalton found himself in the difficult situation of wanting to enjoy an ice cold beer on a Southern Rail Train without a bottle opener.

Fortunately, Mr Dalton had his wits about him and discovered a make shift bottle opener on board.

Posting on Twitter, he shared how he used the grates in the roof of his carriage to crack open his beer.

Feeling pretty proud of his discovery, he wrote: “I feel like MacGyver or Ray Mears right now.”

Speaking to the Standard he said: "As a passenger on Southern Rail you have to be prepared at all times to suddenly be plunged into a survival situation.

"Mine happened somewhere near Gatwick. I discovered I had no bottle opener for my beer. Relying only on my wits I realised that I needed to adapt if I was going to stay hydrated. That's when I looked up and saw the ceiling grating. I don't know whether a higher power directed my eyes skywards, it's possible."

Social media users were equally impressed. The tweet has been reposted over 300 times.

People were quick to label Mr Dalton a genius.

One user wrote: “You’re not working hard Patrick, you’re working smart”

However it appears it was a journey of highs and lows for Mr Dalton as he later tweeted:

“‘Left the train to discover I’ve lost one of the rubber bits from my earphones. The Lord giveth, the Lord taketh away.’
