Spurs resume Olympic stadium fight

Two football clubs, West Ham and Spurs, want to use the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, east London, after the Games end next summer

The latest round of a fight over the future of the 2012 Olympic Stadium has got under way at the High Court.

Two leading London football clubs want to use the £486 million venue in Stratford, east London, after the Games end next summer.

Earlier this year, the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) opted for a bid put forward by West Ham United. Tottenham Hotspur asked a High Court judge for permission to mount a legal challenge to that decision.

Lawyers said they expected to spend the day presenting legal arguments to Mr Justice Collins, sitting in London.

Media reports have suggested Spurs are on the verge of dropping attempts to make a legal challenge.

At the start of the hearing, the judge said he had heard a report on BBC radio and asked if Wednesday's application was "still active". Lawyers for Tottenham said it was.

Dinah Rose QC, for Tottenham, told the judge that the future of the stadium was a matter of "considerable public importance".

She said it was "very important" that the arena was "lawfully disposed of".

"Some £500 million has been spent on the Olympic Stadium," Miss Rose told the judge. "The question of what happens to it when the games are over next summer is obviously a matter of very considerable importance as well as political sensitivity."

She added: "It is very important that the stadium should be, and should be seen to be, lawfully disposed of after the games are over."
