Stars pay tribute to 'unsung heroes'

12 April 2012

The Prime Minister and the Prince of Wales paid tribute to Britain's unsung heroes at the Daily Mirror's Pride of Britain awards.

Tony Blair attended the gala event at the London Television Centre with wife Cherie. They were joined on the red carpet by stars from music, film and television, including Jude Law, Sharon Osbourne and Rod Stewart.

Dame Kelly Holmes, actor David Hasselhoff and pop groups Take That and Girls Aloud were among other stars at the awards on Monday night.

The ceremony, which is now in its eighth year, honours some of the country's bravest and most inspirational people.

Pop princess Kylie Minogue made a rare television appearance to present a Child of Courage Award to six-year-old Katy Miles.

Katy, from Argyll, helped raise £650 for Yorkhill Hospital and the Beatson Oncology Centre, both in Glasgow, where she was treated for a rare kidney cancer, by selling signed Kylie Minogue memorabilia.

Katy had to endure weeks of chemotherapy and went into remission earlier this year - but not before losing her best friend to a brain tumour in January 2005.

Minogue handed over the award to the little girl at a surprise meeting filmed before the ceremony and presented Katy with a signed DVD to replace the one she gave away for auction.

Minogue gave an emotional Katy a hug before performing a dance especially for the child. Katy told ceremony host Carol Vorderman that she had a message for Kylie and said: "Thank you for my present."

Later Katy said of her meeting with Minogue: "It was a surprise and it made me feel happy. I gave her a big hug. She's very pretty."
