Teenager hurt in carnival stabbing

12 April 2012

A 15-year-old boy is in hospital after being stabbed at London's Notting Hill Carnival.

The teenager was found with several wounds, marring the final day of the two-day spectacular.

He was taken to a central London hospital where his injuries were said to be serious, but not critical.

Scotland Yard said inquiries into the stabbing were continuing.

An estimated 400,000-strong crowd was lured out by the bright Bank Holiday sunshine to enjoy the sights and sounds of what is Europe's largest street party. Police said carnival goers generally behaved themselves and arrests were down on 2008.

Most people were held for public order and drugs offences. Chief Inspector Jo Edwards from the Met Police said stop and search techniques were used to root out trouble before it started.

It emerged that a surprise appearance by singer Miss Dynamite was cancelled due to crowd safety fears.

Event regulators only received notice of the performance hours before the event making it difficult to make the necessary safety arrangements.
