The incredible 66/1 shot on Roger Federer that could land charity £100,000

Good bet? Roger Federer

A gambler who spotted the Wimbledon-winning potential of Roger Federer nine years ago and staked a hefty bet on him winning the tournament seven times could help a charity even after his death.

Nick Newlife passed away before being able to see his wager, which could generate £100,000 of winnings, come to fruition.

But kind-hearted Nick, from Oxford, left the William Hill bet in his will to Oxfam. The charity can claim the winnings if Federer gets the additional Wimbledon title this year, or any year up to 2019.

Graham Sharpe from William Hill said: "Mr Newlife staked a bet of £1,520 on Federer to win seven Wimbledon singles titles back in 2003 and received odds of 66/1. Sadly Mr Newlife died in February 2009, aged 59, but willed the bet on to Oxfam who now stand to receive £101,840 as a result.

"Federer is 4/1 third favourite for this year's tournament despite not having won the event since 2009, so he could yet prove a literal dead cert for the late Mr Newlife and Oxfam."

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are tipped to claim the title ahead of Federer at 7/4 and 2/1 respectively.

Stuart Fowkes, from Oxfam, said: "Legacies amount to 10% of our total income from individuals, so they're essential to us, and as this case proves they can come in all shapes and sizes."
