Terrified thrill-seekers were left stranded 30 feet above the ground after a rollercoaster at Thorpe Park broke down.

Passengers were stuck on the Saw ride at the theme park for up to 90 minutes when it ground to a halt on a vertical incline.

Eight people travelling in the cart had to be escorted to safety by staff after it became jammed on the tracks on Saturday afternoon.

One witness, who was among those trapped on the ride – dubbed the world’s most terrifying rollercoaster – wrote on Twitter: “Stuck in Thorpe Park for over an hour and a half hanging upside down.”

Another tweeted: “Tried to conquer my fear of rides yesterday by going on the Saw ride at Thorpe Park and it stopped halfway up, upside down for an hour. #neveragain”

A Thorpe Park spokesperson said: “An assisted exit is when our team manually remove guests from the attraction.

“As part of our safety procedures harnesses are used on specific parts of rides as a safety precaution - no one was lowered on a harness, it was an added safety measure.

"The total time it took to clear the attraction was one hour and 45 minutes.

"The ride was taken out of action today to add additional cars because we are busy."

The Saw ride is one of the park’s biggest attractions with a “beyond vertical” drop of 100 degrees from a height of 100ft.
