Tory minister’s son claims family split over his bodybuilding

A Tory minister's son banned from playing rugby for drugs offences has claimed that he has been disowned by his mother because he is bidding to become a champion bodybuilder.

Jonny Spelman, 17, said in an online video that he faces being kicked out of the family home.

The former England under-17 rugby player was banned from the sport for 21 months for taking anabolic steroids and a growth hormone. Caroline Spelman, the Environment Minister, who spent more than £60,000 in the courts trying to keep that a secret, was today unavailable for comment.

Now her son is seeking financial support from other weightlifters to help to fund his attempt to be a professional bodybuilder.

In one video, now removed, he said that YouTube viewers were “keeping me fed and continuing to grow”.

He has sought work as a driver and handyman and is understood to have registered at a Solihull job centre. Last month he came second in a UK Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation competition.
