This is the first picture of one of the two chefs from Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck restaurant who were killed in a horrific road accident in Hong Kong.

Carl Magnus Lindgren, 30, died with Jorge Ivan Arango Herrera , 34, when their taxi was crushed between two double-decker buses during a promotional tour.

The chefs, who held senior positions at Blumenthal’s Michelin-starred world-famous restaurant in Bray, Berkshire, were trapped in the cab for more than an hour before firemen could free them from the wreckage. They were later declared dead in hospital, along with their driver Wong Kim-chung, 53.

Local reports said Blumenthal had been in Hong Kong and was travelling in a separate cab at the time of the crash.

The accident happened after one bus driver apparently lost consciousness for 10 seconds and drove into two cars, the chefs’ taxi and the other bus.

A further 56 people, including a seven-month old child, were injured in the accident on Monday.

The chefs had been in Hong Kong with Jonny Lake, head chef of the Fat Duck, to promote a new Blumenthal restaurant.

Mr Lake had tweeted a picture of Mr Lindgren along with other chefs preparing a special dinner at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong hotel on Saturday night.

Chef Raymond Blanc offered his support to those at the Fat Duck via his Twitter account. He wrote: “My heart and my thoughts are with the families of the 2 young chefs from the Fat Duck & with Heston & the whole team at this tragic time.”

A spokesman for the Fat Duck said the men were “uniquely talented young chefs” and “great and dear friends, loved by everyone who worked with them.”

Blumenthal, 46, has three Michelin stars for the Fat Duck, one of the world’s top restaurants.
