Two people die in ambulance crash

12 April 2012

A 10-year-old boy and a man have died after the car they were in was in a crash with an ambulance, police said.

Derbyshire Police said they were passengers in a Ford Escort which was in a crash with an East Midlands emergency ambulance on the A619 Baslow Road in Chesterfield at about 3pm on Saturday.

A spokesman said the man suffered fatal injuries, and the 10-year-old who was a rear passenger, had died in hospital of injuries sustained in the crash.

It is not known whether the ambulance was en route to an emergency call, but East Midlands Ambulance Service said there was no reason to think its driver was at fault.

A spokesman added: "This incident is being investigated by police and we are therefore unable to comment further."
