UK man murdered in Spanish resort

12 April 2012

An investigation has been launched into the murder of a British tourist in a Spanish holiday resort.

The man, from Scotland, was killed in the early hours of Saturday morning in Benidorm.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "A man was attacked at around six or seven o'clock on the morning of Saturday 1 December in an old part of the resort of Benidorm.

"He was with a friend when they were attacked and mugged. However, we do not believe that the mugging caused the man's death.

"We believe that a subsequent incident caused the death of one of the men."

The man has not been named but is referred to as Ken on a Spanish police poster appeal.

His next of kin in Scotland have been informed.

The plea for information, issued by Benidorm police, says that Ken and his friend Bill "were well-known visitors to Benidorm and well-known around the old town bars".

According to the poster appeal the attack took place near the resort's Domino bar.

Benidorm police have described the murder as a "brutal crime" and have issued posters to appeal for witnesses to come forward.
