Forecasters say Britain has endured its gloomiest November in 86 years.

The Met Office said provisional statistics showed only 36.6 hours of sunshine recorded last month – under two thirds of the long-term average.

The low levels were caused by the absence of frosts, barring a three-day cold snap from November 21, with temperatures mild throughout the month.

It means the UK has endured its dullest November since 1929.

The UK’s mean temperature was 8.2C, the third warmest on record in England at two degrees above the November average.

In Wales, forecasters said it was the country’s second warmest as some areas hit 22.4C at the start of the month.

Rainfall was above average across most areas.
