The UK woke to thundery downpours but the rain cleared in London for this year’s Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph.

The Queen and other members of the royal family attended the Armistice centenary service in Whitehall but the downpours that battered the capital on Saturday evening and Sunday morning cleared in time.

The Met Office has said that Sunday should start bright and breezy with some sunny spells later in the afternoon in the capital. Temperatures in the capital should reach around 14C with a slight chance of rain in the evening.

But in other parts of the UK, Remembrance Sunday could be a washout.

The Met Office confirmed that there will be area of showers moving northeastwards across much of Wales, England and Scotland with another area of showers affecting Northern Ireland later on in the day.

Beaches across the UK are taking part in filmmaker Danny Boyle’s Pages of the Sea in which a portrait of an individual from World War One will emerge from the sand. The tide will then wash away the images over time.

Heading into the week, the weather in London will improve on Monday with temperatures reaching a maximum of 15C.

However the south west of England will face heavy showers with a risk of thunder.
