'Waste man' art project set to burn

12 April 2012

An 80ft-high human sculpture made entirely from recycled materials by the award-winning creator of the Angel of the North is to be set alight as part of a day of live public performances.

Turner Prize-winner Antony Gormley enlisted the help of residents to create the Waste Man structure above Dreamland Fun Fair in Margate, Kent, using abseilers and pulley systems.

Teams of volunteers have spent the last two months collecting and sorting materials for the project before climbing up the huge framework to pack it.

The sculpture will burn as part of a day of activities inspired by the biblical book of Exodus, which retells the story of Moses and his search for the promised land.

Other events will include a photographic project, Towards a Promised Land, featuring children who have relocated to Margate, and a concert based on the 10 plagues in the Old Testament book: blood, frogs, lice, flies, death of livestock, boils, hailstones, locusts, darkness and death of the firstborn.

Some of the events will feature in a film called Exodus, which is being made by acclaimed film-maker Penny Woolcock and set to be broadcast on Channel 4 next spring.

The Margate Exodus is funded by Channel 4, Creative Partnerships, Kent, Arts Council England, The Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, the Company of Angels and Kent County Council.
