A woman has been arrested after allegedly managing to get onto a plane at Gatwick without travel documents or identification.

Sussex Police said officers were called at 7am today to reports a 51-year-old woman from Germany had got onto an easyJet aircraft bound for Tenerife before boarding had begun.

A spokesman said airport staff found the woman had no identification, no passport and no boarding pass with her.

She was arrested on suspicion of entering a restricted area without permission and remains in custody.

Passengers who were due to board the aircraft were told to go through security screening in the North Terminal for a second time before they were allowed to get onto the plane.

The flight, which was scheduled to leave at 7.30am, was able to depart at 8.45am.

In a statement, easyJet said: “The delay was caused by additional security screening of all passengers.

“This was carried out as a precaution after a passenger attempted to board without the correct documentation.

“EasyJet's staff alerted the local police.”

The airline said the safety and security of its passengers and crew was its "highest priority" and apologised for any inconvenience caused by the delay.
