A council has suspended its team of litter wardens after a woman was slapped with an £80 fine for feeding "imaginary" ducks.

The woman was approached by a warden and served with the on-the-spot penalty notice after she dropped bread near the River Loose in Kent.

When the woman questioned the penalty, the warden apparently told her he could not see any ducks but the woman claimed they had been frightened off.

Maidstone Borough Council, which employs Kingdom Security to carry out litter patrols, rescinded the fine after an appeal.

The authority has suspended the team of 10 litter wardens pending further review.

The council has previously been accused of using over-zealous litter wardens.

In July, two workers were threatened with fines for "dropping cigarette butts" in Maidstone as they put up a church fence, even though they placed the butts in the bin.

Another man was given a litter fine after dropping a cigarette but in his own wheelbarrow.
