Woodhams police response criticised

12 April 2012

An investigation into the case of Peter Woodhams, the young father shot dead seven months after being stabbed by a gang of youths, revealed "serious flaws in the police response".

Peter Woodhams' murder in August last year was the culmination of a seven-month campaign of violence and bullying which began when he was slashed across the face and stabbed in the neck.

In a short statement, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) report said that it had identified serious flaws in the way the Metropolitan Police investigated the knife attack.

Two of the officers involved in the inquiry are currently undergoing a disciplinary hearing, and the IPCC said it would announce its findings fully when this concluded.

In May, 17-year-old Bradley Tucker was jailed for life for murdering Mr Woodhams outside his home in east London.

After Tucker's conviction, Mr Woodhams' father, also called Peter, said he was "gobsmacked" about the handling of the earlier attack, and said he held the officers involved "personally responsible" for his son's death.

Following the murder, the satellite TV engineer's fiancee, Jane Bowden, 24, claimed she phoned police every day for five weeks after the first attack but officers never took a statement from her.

A total of nine police officers were investigated by the IPCC over the stabbing.

Two are the subject of the misconduct hearing, three - two sergeants and a detective sergeant - received written warnings for their failings, and a detective constable was given "words of advice". Three more officers were cleared of wrongdoing, but given guidance.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police said the force would not be commenting on the case until the conclusion of the misconduct hearing.
