If you are interested in learning what it takes to be a journalist in our newsrooms, the new Evening Standard & Independent Apprenticeship Scheme might be for you. Open to applicants aged 19-24 who do not already have an advanced apprenticeship and/or degree level qualification*, the scheme is designed to offer a structured combination of college-based education and on-the-job experience.
In class, you will learn about every aspect of news reporting and features writing, as well as gaining an understanding of media law and ethics. You will be taught shorthand and be taken to see the inner workings of the court system and parliament. You will focus on the use of digital and social media, as well as more traditional aspects of newspaper production. In our newsrooms, you will work alongside our seasoned journalists to unearth stories, write reports and contribute to our award-winning content. By the end of two years you will be well-placed to compete for junior reporting and writing positions.
The newsroom and classroom elements of the scheme are both crucial towards completing the Apprenticeship successfully. Assuming you meet the required standard you will be awarded an Advanced Apprenticeship in Journalism (Level 3) and an NCTJ diploma in journalism practice at the conclusion of the course.
