Actor Hagen Mills attempted to murder the mother of his young daughter before turning the gun on himself, police have said.

Officers from the Mayfield Police Department said the 29-year-old TV actor, best known for his role in FX series Baskets, shot Erica Price in the arm and chest in Mayfield, Kentucky, on Tuesday.

She survived the attack and told officers Mills, 29, was inside the house and had taken his own life. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ms Price, 34, is in a stable condition in hospital, police said.

Her mother and four-year-old daughter were also in the house at the time of the shooting and are unharmed.

Police said they were treating the incident as an attempted murder-suicide.

A representative for Mayfield Police Department said a motive remained unknown.

In 2016, Mills appeared in the first episode of FX’s black comedy series Baskets, which also starred Zach Galifianakis.

According to his IMDB page, Mills, who is from Kentucky, also appeared in 2013 crime film Bonnie & Clyde: Justified.
