Incredible footage of beachgoers saving the life of a stranded Great White shark has emerged online.

The seven-foot-long male became stuck near South Beach on Massachusetts' Cape Cod peninsula when the tide went out, witnesses said.

In the video of the incident on Monday, posted on YouTube by user Mike Bartel, captions indicate the animal had been trying to catch seagulls when it beached.

The clips shows kindhearted onlookers seeking to help the obviously distressed shark by splashing it with buckets of water, before rescuers arrive to tow it back into the water.

At least a dozen people including children watch on as rope is attached to its fin and the large animal is dragged off the beach.

On entering the water it initially remains still, giving harbourmasters a chance to place a tag in its fin, but the shark was said to have been swimming on its own when it reached open water.
